Storing Coffee: Tips to Maintain Freshness and Taste

For coffee lovers, nothing is better than the fresh taste and strong aroma of a morning cup of joe. And nothing is worse than sipping a stale cup. Flavor can be greatly affected by how coffee beans are stored, so we’ve put together a few tips and suggestions on how to properly store coffee to ensure your brew is at its best every time.

Guide to Storing Coffee

Be sure to store coffee in favorable conditions. Avoid:

  • Moisture
  • Air
  • Light
  • Fluctuating temperature
  • Strong odors

To help coffee keep its flavor:

  • Store coffee in an air-tight container, preferably ceramic or non-reactive metal with an airtight gasket.
  • Keep coffee in a cool, dark place.
  • Buy an amount of coffee that can be consumed within 7-10 days of purchase.
  • Do not pre-grind your coffee.

We don’t recommend storing coffee beans in the refrigerator. This will expose the beans to an excessive amount of moisture and odor that will damage the coffee’s flavor. The freezer is a better option for storing large amounts of coffee beans.

Do’s and Don’ts of freezing coffee beans:

  • Do store fresh coffee beans in the freezer for 2-3 months.
  • Do divide the coffee beans into weekly portions so the beans freeze and defrosted once.
  • Do use an opaque, freezer-safe bag and remove as much air as possible from the bag.
  • Do allow at least one hour for the frozen coffee beans to defrost before grinding.
  • Do use defrosted beans within 7-10 days.
  • Don’t return thawed coffee beans to the freezer. This will ruin the flavor.
  • Don’t freeze pre-ground coffee. Coffee grounds absorb odors more quickly than whole coffee beans.

Froth PRO: More Than Beverages

We’re thinking of a dish that is rich, creamy and delicious. No, we’re not fantasizing about one of our froth PRO hot chocolate beverages. We’re thinking of mashed potatoes.

Why? Because the froth PRO can be used for more than just beverage recipes.

We add frothed non-fat milk to our mashed potatoes for a creamy texture without added fat. Not only can it enhance the texture of a mashed potatoes recipe, frothed milk can also keep the dish hotter when used in place of cold milk.

Capresso froth PRO

Place the frothing disk in your Capresso froth PRO and ensure it is securely snapped inside the bottom of the frothing pitcher. Simply pour the milk called for in your favorite mashed potatoes recipe into the pitcher. Do not fill past the MAX F line which is 8-oz.  Place lid and press the HOT button. Wait for frother to automatically shut off. Follow the recipe’s steps and add the milk to the other ingredients accordingly.

Learn about other ways you can use your Capresso froth PRO by visiting our Tips & More page.

Note: In addition to using frothed non-fat milk in our favorite mashed potatoes recipe, we also enjoy preparing the dish with a The Laughing Cow® Light Cheese Wedge in place of butter. Try adding a Light Garlic & Herb wedge wherever your favorite mashed potatoes recipe calls for butter.

Lemon Chiffon Latte

A toast to Laura Wagenen-Birdsill, a Capresso event representative and creator of the Lemon Chiffon Latte. This light and refreshing drink was inspired by Laura’s memories of enjoying pie with her family.

Laura said she was reminded of meringue the first time she frothed milk in the Capresso froth PRO on the cold setting. She thought to pair the cold frothed milk with vanilla syrup and fresh lemonade. “This pairing created something that was almost like a drinkable lemon meringue pie,” said Laura. “If you wanted to kick it up a notch, just add a shot of vodka.”

Laura created the Lemon Chiffon Latte and sampled it with the public who gave rave reviews. “Everyone was very surprised and delighted that this taste sensation was created with very few ingredients and simply by using the milk frother on the cold setting,” said Laura. “Everyone loves the versatility of the froth PRO.”
